New Equipment and Software Just to Get Started Ghostwriting

by Anne Wayman on May 4th, 2005

Yesterday I crammed more into the day than I realized. First up was buying a new tape recorder because Monday I start working with a new ghostwriting client. The current plan is to tape a conversation about the book each week which I will turn into a chapter. That sounds straight forward enough, but I knew from conversations on my forum that it might be possible to get Dragon Naturally Speaking to transcribe those tapes.

Oh my, that meant uploading Dragon and training it, and figuring out what recorder had a decent chance of interfacing with the software. I ended up with an Olympus digital with its own software. It’s so tiny my worst fear is I’ll lose it on the desk – to say nothing of prying it out of its shop-lifter-proof packaging!

I can record and play back now… and I think I know what I have to do to get this all together. My picture is coming home from the conversation, plugging the recorder into the computer and taking a long, hot bath with a mystery novel while the setup transcribes for me. Then, the next day, I’ll easily and elegantly create a chapter. Sure! I’ll keep you posted.

I also updated my website with google ads in most articles… another bang and copy operation that took forever. Plus finished the negotiation on the new contract! At one point I needed some sanity so I spend 30 minutes in the garden… if I can figure out how to recharge the battery on my almost new camera I’ll post a picture.

Not much writing at all yesterday and probably not much until next week. One of the facts of freelance writing is there’s lots of what I’ve come to call ‘goat dancing’ to be done to support the business.

Anne, how’s been your progress in getting your computer to transcribe your prose, or voice? Your post of 4 May 2005 (over a year ago) gave the impression that you expected it to produce clean copy, ready to edit, if needed. So, I wonder if you’ve realized such results, or — more likely — if you have forgiven the computer and recommenced typing yourself or hired a human.
    Hint: I do this, v v v well.

Hi Alan, the project I was working on got canceled… the program is Dragon Speaks Naturally. I’ve heard great things about the newest version but I don’t really have a need for it.

However, transcriptionists always have a place… do you have a website offering your services?
