The Golden Pencil: The Freelance Writer’s Resource

If You Buy Only One Book on Freelance Writing

by Anne Wayman on May 15th, 2005

Anyone who is serious about a freelance writing career simply must have the current edition of Writers Market. Here’s why this annual directory of freelance writing markets is so important:

  • It has literally thousands of writing market listings. Each of these is generated by the publication or publisher in question. The listing spell out what they want written, what rights they buy and how much they pay. They also tell writers exactly how to submit.
  • Listings include markets for your writing that you would never find any other way. There are listings for trade magazines and listings for publishers of all sorts.
  • There are truly helpful articles for freelance writers in all stages of their career. Everything from how to set up a manuscript to how to write a query letter. Plus featured editors talk in depth about their approach to working with writers.
  • Paging through this annual is bound to spark ideas for articles and/or books you wouldn’t have thought of any other way.

I actually now buy the book each year and signup for the online service; if you can only afford one, I suggest the book.
