The Golden Pencil: The Freelance Writer’s Resource

Freelance Writer Pokes Around on the Net

by Anne Wayman on May 20th, 2005

Yesterday, when I finally shut down the computer, I expected to wake up this morning and do some work on the ghostwriting project. Instead I came to with a ferocious headache – feels like some sort of allergy. I felt better moving around so I turned on the computer and started fiddling.

I’ve been looking for a larger place to live, so I started with Craig’s List; they’ve added google maps to their listings and I discovered the link to a satellite picture of the area around any given address.

I love it! I can actually see my garden, sort of. Go to the highest magnification, then click on the Satellite link, upper right. If you look to the left of the pointer, you’ll see a patch of green between to light grey (they are actually white) buildings… that’s my tiny lawn!

As my headache lessened, I decided to find way to email google and tell them how much I appreciated the satellite pictures. That took me to their About Google page and oh my goodness, what a rich resource. Try Google Labs – you can set up a personal page at google that has the news headlines and other feeds you find useful. A great writer’s resource, and free!

Poke around – there are links to nerdy blogs and details on how google searches, and an insider’s newsletter.

I’ve been on the web so long I’d almost forgotten what an hour or two spent exploring will reveal. Sure, it can be a time waster; on the other hand, an hour or two of just following links that interest you can generate all sorts of ideas and leads to information any writer needs or wants.

I also discovered The Dream Meme – which simply pleased me… so I share it with you, hoping it will please you too.

Write well and often!
