12 New Freelance Editing and Writing Jobs

When I search for jobs to post I often run into listings that don’t make it totally clear if the poster is willing to have the writer work from home or telecommute. When I can’t determine what they want I have to guess, and my thinking runs something like this:

  • If they call it freelance but specify 40 hours a week, or something close, I generally ignore it because locking in on the number of hours seems to indicate a certain lack of flexibility
  • I also mostly ignore jobs that contain phrases like “must work closely with staff” or some such – the staff, the in-house designer, etc., are all in an office someplace.
  • Some I ignore because they are jobs I know require showing up at an office unless the publisher has really worked to make telecommuting possible; if they have, they usually state it clearly.
  • Many of the jobs listed in New York city simply have a tone that shouts “be in the office at 8 a.m.” Unless those spell out telecommute possibilities, I ignore them too.

Am I right when I make these decisions? I don’t really know. I suspect I am much of the time, but I’m equally sure the occasional real freelance writing job gets missed.

What does this mean to you? While my freelance writing job postings are easy to use, they are not the final word – not by a long shot. That’s why I also post Where I Search and have a few sites that offer jobs listed more or less permanently at the bottom of each list.
