The Golden Pencil: The Freelance Writer’s Resource

14 New Freelance Writing and Editing Jobs

by Anne Wayman on May 26th, 2005

With fair regularity I get questions about the sites that let writers bid on writing contracts. The draw, of course, is that you get a list of projects and you can search until you find those that match your skills. It’s easy.

The major problem with these sites, however, as far as a freelance writer is concerned is that the price usually gets bid down so low it doesn’t make sense for anyone but the employer. And I often wonder if the employer, accepting the lowest bid, ever gets what she really wants.

Setting fees and getting paid is a major and ongoing issue for freelance writers and editors. Full time freelancers have to earn enough to pay not only the normal living expenses, but taxes and health insurance, plus some to put back into the business. It’s rare that the jobs you’ll get from bidding sites will pay you enough per hour to make it worthwhile.

In How Much Should I Charge For My Freelance Writing? I address many of these issues. The bottom line is you need to know what your fees are and be willing to ask for them.
