The Golden Pencil: The Freelance Writer’s Resource

Serious Freelance Writers are Running a Business

by Anne Wayman on May 31st, 2005

I don’t know about you, but I sometimes have trouble thinking of my freelance writing as a business. I get caught in the creativity and, if not careful, can lose track of the details of my writing as a business. One of the most important and, for me, least interesting, details is tracking billable hours and expenses. I often solve this by charging a flat fee, but that’s not always the best way to make sure I’m earning a good living in my chosen field. And even when I charge a flat fee, I do my self a real disservice if I don’t keep track of my expenses.

Fortunately, keeping track doesn’t have to be complex. I list several ways in my article, Tracking Billable Hours and Expenses. I actually use two methods… a notebook and then, eventually, I transfer the financial info to QuickBooks. Between the two, I can bill clients when necessary and know what I’m billing them for, and track the expenses I can deduct from my income tax.

Treat your freelance writing like a business – it will pay you back well for the effort.

Write well and often,

A
