The Golden Pencil: The Freelance Writer’s Resource

Getting Started in Freelance Writing with Community Newspapers

by Anne Wayman on June 1st, 2005

Many people think they want to try freelance writing and they often ask “how do I get started.” In my article, Top 3 Ways to Get Started In Freelance Writing, I list approaching your local small newspaper as a great way to get your foot in the door. The small newspapers I’m talking about are the community ones, usually produced weekly and often given away free.

The reason your small community newspaper is such a good place to get started is they are usually hungry for articles. They want pieces that inform their readers about local activities and stores.

So look around and come up with three or four ideas. For example; “New Clothing Boutique Opens,” or “Little League Tryouts This Week,” or “Park Parking Lot Paved,” Call or email the editor with your ideas; if you have a couple of credits, mention them. Chances are you’ll get an assignment. Don’t be surprised if it’s something totally different than the ideas you proposed. If it’s something you think you can handle, go for it. Make sure you know the deadline and how long the piece should be.

Community newspapers don’t pay much, often $20.00 or less. But getting published in one several times helps you build a portfolio of clips and, helps build your confidence.

Write well and often!
