The Golden Pencil: The Freelance Writer’s Resource

Interview Your Potential Writing Clients

by Anne Wayman on June 6th, 2005

You send out your list of writing credits in response to a freelance writing job posting. A few days later, totally unexpected, you get a call from the person who needs some writing done – suddenly you’re in an interview. Take a deep breath and focus on what your potential client is saying and asking.

Answer the questions, and then ask some of your own. Actually interview the potential client. You want to know things like deadlines, number of revisions expected and who besides the person you’re talking to will need to approve the writing you produce. You also want to know not only the amount of pay but how it will be processed and how long you’ll have to wait for it.

By the time you’ve had this conversation, you’ll have a sense of who the client is and if you want to work with them. If I want the job I usually end these conversations with three questions:

  • What else would you like to ask me?
  • What else should I ask you?
  • What’s the next step.

By the time we’re finished with this sort of interview conversation, we’ve laid the groundwork for a good working relationship.
