Write About Your Life

by Anne Wayman on June 7th, 2005

A gal in our forum has written about her role as the family geek. This is a great example of using your life as the basis for articles. Do it well enough and you’ll start earning money at it.

It works because although each of us is unique, we are enough alike so others identify with our experience. Which isn’t to say that you too are the family geek – but you are the family expert on something. You can write a story about your expertise or you can write a story about your lack of expertise. Now that I’m thinking about it, I might write a story on the friend I call on to fix things around the house.

If I decide to do that, I’ll probably write a draft paragraph or two, and then look for a market.

This type of article is usually short, and sells because of your personal voice and experience.

I generally complete the article and send it, unsolicited (over the transom) with a SASE (Self Addressed Stamped Envelope). Often I get an acceptance.

Write well and often!

That’s a neat idea. What kind of magazine do you usually send these sorts of things off too, and are they personal essays? Magazines like Womens Day comes to mind.

Actually, I tend to post them on my site these days, but Woman’s Day, Family Circle and the others are likely suspects. The magazines at the checkout counter… and yes, they can be called personal essays or fist person artilces… either one works.
