The Golden Pencil: The Freelance Writer’s Resource

Sunday Papers Best For Freelance Writing Job Hunting

by Anne Wayman on June 19th, 2005

If you live in an area with a Sunday newspaper, that may be your best source of freelance writing jobs in your area. And if your paper is online with a search function for the classifieds, it’s easy breezy.

Each Sunday I bring up my papers classified section and search first on freelance then on writer and finally on ghostwriter. Sure, I get some odd entries – in our area writer often brings up something to do with car dealerships, but it takes almost no time to bypass those. Pick the keywords that work for you.

I rarely buy Sunday papers anymore. In our area, the politics of our local big newspaper drives me nuts; I can further justify not buying it by claiming to save trees. But two or three times I’ll lug the paper version home and go through everything except the sports. I usually come up with an idea or two for articles I want to write, and often learn something that makes it worth while.

Write well and often.

I don’t really enjoy reading newspapers because they’re so unwieldy (stupid reason, I know). When I do go through one every couple of weeks or so, I always see something that interests me and inspires some writing. Reading the newspaper online doesn’t allow for as much serendipity.

Lei, that’s not stupid… I find the unwieldly too… seems like long ago I enjoyed paging through, but no longer. And you’re right, online reading doesn’t allow for serendipity.
