The Golden Pencil: The Freelance Writer’s Resource

Wondering About Self Publishing?

by Anne Wayman on June 24th, 2005

Most freelance writers have at least one book in them. It may be a novel or a self-help book or a book on almost any subject. Often the initial goal is to find a trade publisher that will not only provide a large advance, but help with the marketing all leading to fame and fortune.

The reality, however, is that many good books go unsold. But the revolution in printing, leading to what’s known as print on demand or POD, means that anyone can publish their own book and brings it to market through the internet. It’s an exciting proposition. It’s totally doable, but it sure isn’t easy.

There are several keys to your success as a self-publisher and the biggest stumbling block is the marketing.

I’ve written a series of articles on self-publishing, based on my own experience and the experience of others. It’s a good place to start.

Write well and often.
