The Golden Pencil: The Freelance Writer’s Resource

Writing for Peace

by Anne Wayman on July 7th, 2005

Like most of us, I woke up to the horrid news from London. As it happens, I’m also reading Chopra’s Peace is the Way as part of my morning practice. One of the things he suggests is sharing your practice and invite others to join you.

My commitment is to write for peace. I’ve written an article, called Terrorism and This Freelance Writer. In it, toward the bottom, is an invitation to join me. I have no idea at the moment what form this will take. Let’s explore it together.

Love, blessings, and peace,

A

p.s. I’ve finally created the blog, When Grandmother Speaks - take a look.

I’m not quite sure what you mean, "writing for peace". You’ve raised some interesting questions, however, and I think I might write something at SpeckBlog about what you’ve said.

    I’ll track back to you.

Anne, I think the London bombings are yet another reminder that terrorism is not halted by wars and guns. Terrorism, in my very humble opinion, has a better chance of being curtailed when cultures and people understand each other and build trust and friendship.

Not to rile up those who equate opposition to the war as not "supporting" our troops, either. Opposition is not automatically a renouncing of people who have to/want to serve. It’s a renouncing of the need for war.

Jimmy Carter has proven time and again that we can indeed build stronger bridges to freedom through negotiation than through war. My opinion is that the reason other countries want to do us harm is because they don’t understand our culture. Not everyone is making millions of dollars. We’re not all living a storybook life. The images flashed to other countries through various media may well be the only images they have of how we live. Maybe it’s time we give them different images.

Thanks Lori - I totally agree. I’ve been looking for blogs and websites about Islam with the goal of understanding… still have more questions than answers… but questions are good…
