The Golden Pencil: The Freelance Writer’s Resource

Using a Freelance Writing Coach

by Anne Wayman on July 18th, 2005

I’ve been coaching other freelance writers for quite awhile now. It’s always an interesting process. Each client brings a different set of expectations, goals, and situations.

When I look back over my clients I think the most important things I bring are:

  • Years of freelancing and professional editing that allow me to share based on my own experience.
  • Someone for my clients to be accountable to.

Of course, I love showing off my experience and being considered an expert. Who doesn’t? But the piece that amazes me the most is the accountability piece.

What seems to be most helpful is, with the client, setting some milestones, complete with definition of the project and dates. Then, when those milestones are made, we can celebrate together. If, however, the target is missed, we can explore what got in the way. It seems there’s always helpful insight to be gained in this process – and sometimes not just for the client. I find, when it’s all working well, I gain at least as much as my client.

Write well and often.

I’ve written an article about coaching: Using a Writing Coach
