The Golden Pencil: The Freelance Writer’s Resource

Lazy Days

by Anne Wayman on July 21st, 2005

I gave my self a day off today. I’ve done nothing all day but read a mystery novel. Well, almost nothing. It’s late on a hot afternoon and I’m blogging, and I have checked my email and answered a few phone calls. But mostly I’ve done nothing much. I didn’t plan to do nothing today. My calendar has all the usual things, but none of them really required action today. And when I woke up I felt, well, drained, and uncreative and not like working at all.

I’m disciplined about my writing and my work so I totally trust myself to just do nothing once and awhile. It wasn’t always like this. It took practice. But now I know that I need some down time… time just to sit around and do nothing. It somehow fuels my brain. Ideas bubble to the surface, energy returns and so does the desire to write.

Write well and often.
