Scam Warning & Common Sense

by Anne Wayman on July 25th, 2005

A forum member posted a link to The Knight Agency blog. Apparently at least 40 ebook authors offering to represent them under the name of Deidre Knight, the real president and founder of the agency. The offer said they would charge only 10% and guaranteed a sale.

While there are some literary agencies that still charge 10%, 15% is much more common. But the real kicker in the offer is the guarantee. Unless you’re Robert Parker (well known mystery writer), JK Rawlings of Harry Potter fame or some other immediately recognizable name, there is simply no way a legitimate agent will guarantee a sale – period!

So use some common sense. If you get an email that sounds too good to be true assume it is, at least until you really check it out. Make a phone call; look the person up on the web and for goodness sake don’t sign anything, or send any money unless you’re absolutely sure you’re dealing with the real person.

Write well and often,
