Nothing is Wasted on a Writer
Ive been doing some content writing for real estate websites. The goal is to write copy that attracts clients while doing search engine optimization. The people Im writing for suggest use of the search term three or four times in the first paragraph and two, three or four uses in subsequent paragraphs. It can be a real challenge to use a term like San Diego Real Estate that many times in one paragraph! Of course, real estate in San Diego counts, but its not as easy as it sounds.
Keep in mind too, that, by its very nature, the web demands short paragraphs because people dont really read on the web the way they read something in print; they scan. So do search engines, scanning for the search term.
The other problem is that some of the towns Ive been asked to write about are in far distant places different states and places Ive never been. Some of them are tiny, with barely a listing in google. So the research is also a challenge. And I must confess I make some things up, more or less.
I do have a rather extensive background in real estate which makes it easier for me to extrapolate information from property listings and google maps than in it might be for some. For example, theres a tiny town in north east Oregon that I could find very little about in multiple searches. MSN maps saved the day for me; the satellite picture of the area showed distinct irrigation patterns I recognized as the kind you get when youre putting water on wheat and grain. That picture allowed me to fill out my data with a minimum of puffing well, maybe not a minimum, but with less than if I hadnt recognized the pattern or thought to look for the pictures.
It always amazes me how nothing Ive ever done is wasted as a writer it seems I have the opportunity to use it all.
