The Golden Pencil: The Freelance Writer’s Resource

Freelance Writers and Business

by Anne Wayman on October 12th, 2005

We freelancers lead a lovely life. We create our own hours and pick and choose among clients, well, at least some of the time.

We are also responsible for all our own taxes and benefits. Benefits like health insurance, disability coverage and retirement. It’s tough, not because it isn’t possible to earn enough money to cover all that and more, it is. But it means really paying attention to the money.

Most writers I know would rather do almost anything else, including the laundry and the dishes, than balance a checkbook or deal with insurance. We’re good at broad concepts and, if their implementation is creative, good on the follow-through. But if it’s conventional, requires a disciplined, step-by-step approach, well, we’d rather not. So often dealing with money issues falls into the conventional, disciplined, step-by-step approach.

But, pay attention we must if we’re to have anything like balance and security in our lives.

For me this means two things:

  • I must continually pay attention to my marketing.
  • I must always track my expenses and income.

Every time I let up on either of activities, my income falls, period. In other words, I must treat my writing as a business.

Sigh!
