Talking With a Literary Agent

by Anne Wayman on October 27th, 2005

I’ve been talking with an agent about some of my work – well, exchanging emails. I suspect we’ll actually do business together, and it could be great for me. She’s been aware of me and my work on About.com and a month or so ago I got it together to email her. I actually put together a proposal that didn’t fly because my topic in a series had already been assigned.

So I asked her about my self-published book, Powerfully Recovered! And she’s interested. Since I’m working on a proposal on a new book, I asked her about that one and she said send the proposal when it’s finished.

Then I remembered a book of mine that was published almost 20 years ago. I had to order a used copy, and you know, it’s not bad. It needs some serious rewriting, but the basics are there. She actually got excited about that one.

Of course, it’s almost the end of October and nothing much happens in the book publishing world until we get past the holidays, including New Years… so she’s expecting three proposals from me in December for possible marketing in January.

The thing that fascinates me is it looks like the project with the most potential is work I did so long ago. So I’m of a mind to suggest you don’t give up on anything you’ve written. Chances are it can be redone.

Write well and often,
