Poor Spelling and Grammar May Mean Freelance Writing Jobs

by Anne Wayman on November 12th, 2005

A hew and cry has again gone up about the state of both spelling and grammar in the United States. If you’re willing to put up with advertising and use Internet Explorer, you can watch MSN’s Brian Williams do a rather cute report about the desperate state of language at http://video.msn.com/v/us/v.htm?g=e6f8e7be-43eb-4603-bb9f-74e61d795042&a%20mp;t=&f=34/64&p=

Williams blames computers in part for the problem… particularly email and text messaging. I happen to think more blame can be found in the sorry state of our schools, but that’s another subject.

Williams also says that the costs of this problem to business is something like 3 billion dollars, although he doesn’t state why or how it costs that much. He does, however, talk about corporations who are teaching their employees proper spelling and grammar. Who better than freelance writers to teach these classes? At least writers who know the technical details or writing can. It also strikes me that all this press means we should be able to write helpful articles for the trades about writing well.

It also strikes me that if you’re doing corporate writing, some nod to this concern could be included in your next proposal… perhaps you could propose a workshop, or offer to edit for a department or other group.

Surely there’s a way to take advantage of all this press.

Write well and often,
