Freelance Writers Need to Play

by Anne Wayman on November 19th, 2005

Today I joined my son, daughter-in-law, and grandson to watch his sister in a play. Emily is part of the Junior Theater Group here in San Diego and this time they put on a performance of Harry Potter. It was confusing, noisy and the kids obviously had a blast. We parents and grandparents of course enjoyed watching the kids cavort. I took more pictures than makes any sense, which is one of the things grandmothers are supposed to do, right?

It was good to do something entirely different. I know writers need to get away from the computer from time-to-time and tell the writers I coach to do so. But it isn’t until I pry myself away that I recognize just how refreshing it can be.

So turn that computer off and go do something just for fun.

Write well, and often, and don’t forget to play!

I’ve had to do this often, and what I usually do is say something first like, "Wow, you have some wonderful ideas here." Then I go on to pick it apart depending on how much help they really want. Often, I think people say they want help, but they really just want you to say how great their writing is. Another thing I do is tell them that I was extra picky because I was trying to help them.
