Publishing Scammer Pleads Guilty

by Anne Wayman on December 13th, 2005

The Small Press Blog posted a link to an article about someone pleading guilty in a publishing scam. It seems Martha Ivery, who advertised in Writer’s Digest and on the ‘net, stands accused of bilking 200 would-be authors of something like a total $700,000. (That works out to $3,500 per author average!)

According to the article, Ivery was running a fee-charging agency scam that collected fees but rarely, if ever, placed a book with a publisher. In addition to billing her clients, she stalked them when they didn’t pay.

Most scams don’t go as far as stalking, but no truly reputable literary agency charges a fee. Writers beware!

Write well and often,
