Warnings for Writers

by Anne Wayman on December 14th, 2005

Every now and again someone will ask me if such and such ad is a scam. Usually I’ve never heard of the service or company in question so could only advise caution. Yesterday I discovered Writer Beware, a great site that posts warnings about scams aimed at writers. And it’s been around since 1998!

It’s a fascinating site. Not only are there warnings about rip-off artists, but there is plenty of information to help writers spot, avoid and report swindles. There’s also a truly helpful section on what recourse you may have if you feel you’ve been taken.

There are case studies that are interesting in themselves, and also provide clues for avoiding similar scams. There are also warnings about contests… this is a deep site and well worth spending some time on.

Write well and often,
