The Golden Pencil: The Freelance Writer’s Resource

Do You Suppose?

by Anne Wayman on April 13th, 2006

For years I’ve said I want to write a mystery series. I’ve even got a wonderful plot device for

one, and the outline (in my head) of a heroine… and that’s all. I’ve yet to really commit anything to paper, thereby violating my own rules of success.

None the less, I still read books about mystery writing and recently picked up one I’ve had on the shelf for a long time. It’s How To Write Mysteries by Shannon OCork… apparently out of print but still available through used bookstores.

I particularly like how she talks about the difference between a plot and a situation… what I’ve got is a situation… now, can I turn it into a plot?

Only time will tell.

You might want to read the short review I’ve written about this book.

Write well and often,

Anne Wayman

Yes, Anne, you CAN write a mystery. Once an idea seizes you and refuses to let go, sit down and write it — no excuses. You can always go back and patch or knit up plot holes. Tell the story and hone it in the revisions.
