The Golden Pencil: The Freelance Writer’s Resource

What Kind of Freelance Writer Do You Want To Be?

by Anne Wayman on May 7th, 2006

People just getting started in freelance writing, or even just thinking about writing as a possible career often ask me “should I specialize?” I’m never sure how to answer that question. My own experience is that my writing career has evolved in ways I never could have predicted.

I started years ago by submitting two articles, one each to Woman’s Day and Family Circle. Both were properly rejected, but they broke the ice on my shyness and hesitancy. I sold a few things to a local newspaper then queried Hazelden about a booklet on being both sober and single. They bought it and that started a specialty in drug and alcohol recovery, which lasted for many years. I still write about this from time-to-time and maintain, sort of, a website about it all called Powerfully Recovered.

Of course, during that time I also did all sorts of other kinds of writing, including ghostwriting, article writing (I had a minor specialty in writing about running for awhile, later I spend some delightful time exploring and writing about boats).

When the web hit I recognized it was another form of publishing and was soon writing for various sites on a wide variety of subjects. And now there’s both web content and blogging.

Today, I’m ghosting three books on disaster preparedness – a whole new specialty for me and it came about because of a ghostwriting job I’d done several years ago. And so it goes. What will I be writing this time next year? Although I’ve got some plans, your guess is as good as mine.

Write well and often,
