Not Just Writing
I don’t know about you, but I often find myself advising clients about much more than just writing. For example, I’m currently writing a series of three books for a client. Each book will be self-published by the company and they are looking to me to guide them through the whole publishing process. I can do this because I’ve self-published one of my books and have worked with others involved in the same process.
Of course, I don’t have all the answers. At the moment we’re thrashing around trying to figure out how to get about 15 line drawings done at a reasonable cost. I know what kind of drawings we need, but haven’t yet a clue about actually getting them done.
They’ve also asked me for advice on distribution. Again, I understand book distribution only in the most general way. They have their own distribution channel which they know how to use, but they want a wider audience. We’re all in agreement that a larger market is out there, but none of us is yet sure of the best way to reach it. So we’re thinking and researching.
I’ve also suggested that each of these books might do well as audio books. And at least the first book might work well broken into smaller pieces to be sold as booklets. Neither idea had occurred to them – and why would it? After all, getting words into print is my game and along the way, I’ve picked up some understanding of non-traditional channels can work.
My sense is, as writers, nothing we do or learn is ever wasted. It’s all grist for the mill. It often shows up in our writing and if it doesn’t show up there, it does in other ways that benefit our clients… and as a result, ourselves.
Write well and often,
