Research And This Freelance Writer
I don’t consider myself a “real” researcher. You probably wouldn’t want to hire me to do academic research or anything close to that. On the other hand, I often need to look up facts, definitions, proper spelling of names, exact titles of books… all sorts of things.
I generally google. I’ll start with a key word or two and usually come up with way more than I need for the particular project. Google news is helpful too – I currently have an alert set for disaster preparedness for a series of books I’m working on.
I love the way Google corrects my spelling, and have been known to use it just for that. I also like getting word definitions there – do you know this trick? In the search bar, type define:
But sometimes I want a different look at my subject. Once again, our forum introduced me to another resource. It’s the Internet Public Library (IPL.org). It’s free, which is good. And it often surfaces something that’s probably too far down in Google for me to ever find.
