A reader emailed me telling me she lives outside the United States. She was wondering how she could work with U.S. publishers and get paid.
I recommended PayPal. Sure, there are fees, but they seem reasonable to me… particularly for smaller payments. I once accepted a check from Canada that was under $5. My bank […]

A reader alerted me to a freelance writing job I posted yesterday that required an entry fee and had some other questionable information in it. She had tracked down the url of the company in question, which I had failed to do. I often will double check before I post, but this one slipped through. […]

Whew… site is back up… and there are 63 new freelance writing jobs.
Keep your fingers crossed… experience tells me that once a bunch of sites from one provider go down, they may be up, then down, back up for an hour or two. But it’s at least on the mend.

Every now and again I’m contacted by a student who wants help with a paper. If they want me to do all the work, including the research, I turn them down on the theory that research and initial writing is their job.
Several months ago, however, I was contacted by a student who had done the […]

Kristen King, owner of the Inkthinker blog has a great guest article about proofreading. As freelancers we’ve always got to proof our own work, but I think we need to recognize our limitations.
I am not a copy editor. My spelling is far too creative; my mind doesn’t seem to be able to see the details […]

Fellow writer and blogger, Lori Widmer, has written a good post on word counts of all things. She offers sound advice, like checking for places where you’ve drifted from the original assignment, going back to the original assignment, outlining, and starting all over.

Just posted 55 new freelance writing jobs. Warning ;) I’ve already applied for two.
Truth be told, part of the reason I started job postings oh so long ago was just that… to surface gigs I might want.
You know, I’m tired today… probably because I’ve had a heady and heavy 10 day stretch without much break… […]

I’m always telling people they shouldn’t write for free… I don’t always follow my own advice. I’ve volunteered to head a project that, among other things, requires what has turned out to be a 12 page registration packet (originally it was 16 pages, so 12 feels like progress to me). Roughly half is boilerplate… which […]

I don’t know about you, but I often find myself advising clients about much more than just writing. For example, I’m currently writing a series of three books for a client. Each book will be self-published by the company and they are looking to me to guide them through the whole publishing process. […]
