The Golden Pencil: The Freelance Writer’s Resource

Freelance Writers, Blogging and Money

by Anne Wayman on June 28th, 2006

The topic of blogging and money came up in my forum recently. The question was really “can you make money” blogging. My answer is a qualified ‘yes.’ I currently make more than enough to pay for all my internet fees – several websites, maintaining a left-over email address that I’m stuck with until I do a new edition of one of my books, my auto-responder service and the like. But its nickels compared to some of the biggies.

For example, Darren Rowse, over at ProBlogger.com is a “Six figure blogger.” He’s also a full-time blogger with multiple blogs. I don’t think I want to be a full-time blogger, but I find info on his site incredibly helpful.

Others report they have found writing clients through their blogs – that hasn’t happened with me yet, but I suspect it will.

Many freelance writers blog because they have a yen to journal about their writing and writing career. Many of them don’t make a dime and couldn’t care less.

The bottom line? It really depends on what you want from blogging and what you’re willing to give.

By giving, I include paying attention, good, clear writing that offers something of value to your reader. And, if you want to earn money, some serious time marketing and maybe even some marketing money.

Is it worth it? I think it is and it’s easy to get started with blogger.com. WordPress offers more flexibility and both are free. Give blogging a shot.

Write well and often,

Anne Wayman, freelance blogger
