Freelance Writers Should Accept Online Payments
Matt Keegan, creator of The Article Writer Blog has two posts on online payments. Today’s announces Google’s new payment system and he does a good job of covering what the search giant is up to, including lower fees than PayPal.
On the 27th, Matt strongly advises freelancers to accept PayPal in spite of the fees they charge. As he points out, client’s who are willing to pay by PayPal often pay right away – not always, of course, but often enough to make the fees worthwhile. PayPal fees are certainly lower than the typical monthly charge you’ll pay if you get a merchant account that allows you to take credit cards – figure about $50 a month for that service, plus fees.
Another advantage of PayPal is people can pay you even if they don’t have a PayPal account – although why they wouldn’t want one is beyond me. Essentially PayPal allows you to act as if you have a merchant account – you can take credit cards.
A final, admittedly minor, advantage is once you’re a verified PayPal merchant – which simply means they’ve verified you’ve actually got a checking account they can make deposits to – you can set up a PayPal store – it’s just one more form of advertising.
Accepting online payments is a must-have for any serious freelance writer.
Write well and often,

I whole-heartedly agree! Although I’ve only had two clients actually pay me this way, it looks so much more professional to say that you accept credit cards (which you can do if you have a PayPal account) and that clients can pay online.
I have a separate merchant account too for my online businesses where I sell tip sheets and e-courses, but many people still prefer PayPal, so I offer both.
Great tip!
