Time Management - 31 Days to Better Freelance Writing - Day 2

by Anne Wayman on July 2nd, 2006

Alicia, creator of thewritingspark, wants to know how to keep from working too much… at the expense of the rest of her life. I recognize this one because I too work at home and it’s awfully easy to just keep going. Here are a couple of ways I handle this:

  1. Time my work – I talked about this in a blog entry titled Time Tracking… but there the emphasis we really on billing and knowing how I spend my time. Once I began to get a handle on how I was actually using my time, I was much more able to pick and choose… and part of that choice is when to stop.
  2. Use a timer – sometimes I’ll actually set a timer and determine I’ll quit when it bings. I’ve discovered when I quit in the middle like that, I’m often much fresher and the project goes much faster when I start again the next day.

That’s two tips on time management… add your favorites in comments – hmmm, I can see some themes developing and we’re only on the second day of our 31 day project.

Write well and often,

Anne Wayman
