A Whine About File Naming

by Anne Wayman on July 12th, 2006

Sometimes I think the world is split between those love numbers and those who love words. Why am I thinking about this now? Because I’m dealing with a series of documents that have numbers as file names – numbers like 2.1.1.1 and 2.1.1.2.

Okay, it could be worse, one of the docs is named “outline” and it does provide a key of helpful text for each of the 22 documents. But my mind doesn’t really work comfortably going from a key list to a series of numbers. So I’m renaming my copies… keeping the numbers, because I know from experience my client thinks in those numbers and will refer to them… but adding a word or two that will help me find what I’m looking for.

Write well and often,

1 opinion for A Whine About File Naming

You know, Anne, the topic of file naming came up at a writering seminar I attended last year. People were flummoxed when I told them that they need to include their name and probably the date and something at least a little bit descriptive in the file name when they’re sending attachments to editors. Do you know how many files these people receive a day? Do you know how hard it’s going to be for them to find your file if they accidently save it somewhere and then forget it if you don’t include some kind of identifying information? Your job as a writer is to make editors’ lives easier. They will reward you for it!
