The Golden Pencil: The Freelance Writer’s Resource

Writers and Blogging

by Anne Wayman on August 14th, 2006

We’ve had some discussion about writers and blogging in our forum. Seems like writers who blog fall into two or three general categories:

Hoping to make money from the blog
Keeping in touch with readers
Just want to share the writing process

I fall into the first category and I was surprised that several forum members have actually gotten writing clients just from their blog. As far as I know, that hasn’t happened to me yet. But my blog does feed my AboutFreelanceWriting.com site, and that site feeds readers to my blog… sort of recursive, but it seems to work.

Writers who have a following find blogging is a great way to keep in touch. And those who just want to share find the commenting on most blogs gives them great satisfaction.

Do you blog? If so, why? Add a comment or two here.

Write well and often,

4 opinions for Writers and Blogging

I actually got into blogging when the editor of a new blogging network hired me to write the freelance writing blog. I had already been “blogging” about my freelance writing experiences using my personal LiveJournal account. I thought, hey, why not blog for people who are actually in the field?

The network went belly up, but I was so hooked that I bought my own domain :)

I don’t do it for the money; as it’s a personal site, all I make is ad revenue. Though, I did land my current writing/editing gig based partly on my blog - my client had checked it out when I applied, and told me she liked my writing style.

I love the way we find our gigs.

    Hi Anne,

All three actually apply to me, but #1 isn’t as important. Still, I have had some of my blog postings convince people that I have what it takes to do their work.

I admire your blog for many reasons including the fact you receive a study flow of traffic.

    Keep up the good work!

    Regards,
    Matt Keegan

I like being able to share ideas and opinions on the online writing industry.

It’s also a tremendous branding/marketing tool. I receive several inquiries per month from prospective clients who “found me” via the blog.
