Book Proposal – The Letter/Envelope/Labels/Postage Goat Dance
Okay, so I fix the two typos in the cover letter and print it out. I sign it. I print out the proposal; it looks good. Now comes the part that always drives me crazy.
- I have some 8-1/2 x 11 envelopes left over from another progress. The only problem is they have a pre-printed return address which means…
- A trip to the office supply store for labels… ye gods they’ve gotten expensive. Thinking to save some money, like maybe $2.50, I get 3×5 labels.
- A web trip to Avery.com for label templates and the product number doesn’t bring up the right template, but undeterred I do a search and find what I want.
- Just a little fiddling gets me my return address printed four times on a single label, and it does cover up the preprinted address – Yea!
- I remember that Word will print an address from the letter, and yes, there it is, but, horrors my envelope is a bit larger… not much, maybe a quarter of an inch wider than my printer likes.
- I decide to try it anyway, getting a printing jam.
- After clearing that, I decide to put the address on a label, which is fine, but I print on the wrong side which means I get ink on my fingers, and ink on the letter.
- Wash hands
- Print address label
- Reprint letter and sign it.
- Print the SASE
- Gently the whole package and finally, I’m ready for a trip to the post office.
Yikes! This is not one of my pictures about the glamorous writing life!
Okay, part of all this is just the nervousness of submitting the proposal. Now that I’ve gotten one package ready, others will be easier, at least that’s my belief at the moment.
Write well and often,

Anne,
I just wanted to say “Thank You” for putting your submission process out in the open for your readers. I’ve printed out your proposal and I’m watching this all closely. I hope one day soon, I’ll be able to thank you for helping me get published.
