Beware of Cheap Clients!
Freelance writer and blogger tells a cautionary tell on herself in Where is Fair?
Setting rates and sticking to them is a challenge I think every single freelance writer faces. I’ve struggled with it and we often discuss it on our forum.
I’ve come to believe that my attitude toward my self and my own worth is the real key, which is why I’ve got the link to The Soul of Money in this post. (Just click on the bookcover.) Twist offers some truly new thinking on the whole subject of money and our attitudes toward it.
You may also want to take a look at Prevailing Rates for Writers and feel free to post a comment here about your own experience setting and getting the rates you deserve.

Thanks for the link, Anne. :) I think I’ll pick up that book you recommend, too. I’d much rather have a rich soul than a rich bank account, and I suspect the book touches on both.

Hi Anne - I will have to look into that book. I am a big fan of sticking to my rates. When people start to nickel and dime me, it is a sign that they may not understand the value of a good copywriter—and thus not develop into a good opportunity.

Hi Michael, I couldn’t agree more… just got into a minor match with a ghostwriter broker about word counts… they sent something out that led the client to believe there should be more words… a mistake I wouldn’t have made, but I think we got it fixed… and in my favor, plus it’s better for the book. Never worked through a broker before.
