Book Proposal – Book Store Search Results

by Anne Wayman on September 18th, 2006

As planned, I went to a big bookstore – Borders in fact. Yes, I know, I love independent bookstores too, but I wanted a commercial, chain store to get a sense of what’s actually happening in the recovery section.

My closest Borders does have a recovery section – they’ve marked two tiers of shelves, but only on set actually had books dealing with 12 Step Recovery – I didn’t think to count, but maybe 50 titles?

Cappuccino and notebook in hand I scanned the shelves in question. Here’s roughly what I found:

  • Although I had most of the publishers listed, I did find three or four more that weren’t. I’ll probably submit to all of these.
  • One publisher I’d eliminated looks like a better suspect after all and will go back on the list.

Most importantly, I got a much better feel for the types of books various publishers actually publish. You can do a lot of research about publishers on the ‘net, but nothing substitutes from actually looking and paging through their books.

Write well and often,
