Copyright - a Possible Violation
A blog that shall remain nameless and linkless, at least at the moment, has copied one of the entries here in total – complete with title, picture and links to my newsletter subscription. I found it because WordPress, the blogging software b5media has us all use, shows incoming links.
As I looked through the blog in question, I found out the following:
- It’s on blogger, which means I can’t trace the owner of the domain name
- The author hasn’t filled out any profile or contact information
- At least at this point the blog carries no ads, not even the google ads blogger allows, so there’s no apparent financial gain to the blogger.
- It looks like I’m not the only blogger that has been copied – although at least one of the articles there was posted through a free article service.
- The blog is new, just this month.
Strangely enough, I’ve been reading Fair Use, Free Use and Use by Permission: How to handle copyrights in all media by Lee Wilson. Actually, it’s more accurate to say that I’ve been reading bits and pieces. Copyright law is pretty dry stuff, although Wilson makes it more understandable than most, making it a reference book worth having.
Shai Coggins has a nifty article on copyright and blogging – I may actually post a link to that article in the unnamed blog’s comments.
I’m not one to get terribly excited about this kind of infringement, if infringement it actually is. But it’s puzzling… I can’t figure out why anyone would go to the trouble of copying a bunch of blog posts about writing from a bunch of writers. So I’ll watch for a while and see what develops, if anything.
Write well and often,
