We Get Paid What We Believe We’re Worth

by Anne Wayman on September 20th, 2006

moneyThere’s an interesting thread over in our forum. It started with a mild rant about the number of low paying writing jobs that are out there. Most of the responses more or less agree that it’s just plain awful.

One poster, however, bucked the trend, pointing out that low paying writing jobs are offered at low rates because writers are willing to take them. He went on to say he really had no problem with that as long as both parties were happy.

I tend to agree, but go one step further. I think we writers get paid exactly what we truly, deep down believe we’re worth. I’ve got two ghostwriting contracts going at the moment. One is well paid, the other not-so-well. One will be easier than the other I think. Both popped at the same time and I took the cheaper one because I wasn’t sure the better paid one would come through and I was feeling broke.

The more I recognize my own skills and the value I bring to a project, I work on my own abundance/prosperity/source consciousness, the more money I make and that has nothing to do with the market. In fact, for the kind of writing I do, I’m not sure I even believe in “the market.”

I’ve written for free when I didn’t know I could charge. I’ve written for pennies because I didn’t know I could get more. Today I pretty much hold to my rates and it works, as long as my consciousness is there… it really is up to me.

What’s your thinking on this?

Write well and often,
