Writing Clients Who Talk and Talk and…

by Anne Wayman on September 26th, 2006

coaching.jpgI ghostwrite and that means talking with ghostwriting clients. Often the talk is actually getting information from their head into mine so I can write using both their information and their voice.

But once and awhile I run into a client who talks and talks and talks and very little has to do with the work we’re doing. Now I’m willing to do some chit-chat, but anything more than a few minutes of this is wasted time from my point of view, and, if they’re thinking, the client’s too. After all, if they are talking at me, I’m not writing and they’re not doing whatever it is they do to get me paid.

I’m learning to set some boundaries, which include:

  • Scheduling all calls – and they call me on a specific date at a specific time.
  • Setting the amount of time for the call in advance – usually something between 30 minutes and an hour.
  • When the ending time is approaching I remind them we’ve only got x more minutes.

Mostly this works. Clients seem to appreciate knowing what’s expected of them and it’s up to me to set the rules.

Write well and often,

Anne Wayman, Ghostwriter
