Carving Out Time For Yourself
I looked at my to-do list this morning and wanted to go back to bed! That list isn’t any longer than yesterday’s or tomorrow’s. I’ve got a mostly regular routine which works for me, so I took a deep breath and asked myself what’s going on.
What’s true for me today is I’m legitimately tired – not tired as in lack of sleep, but fatigued because I’m doing too much. I’m a bit out of balance.
Yesterday was intense; so was Monday. Both days were good days, but I put out a tremendous amount of creative energy. And I’ve got more to put out today.
What I know is that if I don’t take a day or most of a day just for me, with little or no writing, and lots of staring into space or wandering around a museum or walking on the beach, my creative juices will temporarily dry up. And looking at what’s on my list for the rest of the week, I’m going to take Friday afternoon off and either Saturday or Sunday, or maybe both.
As a freelancer, I control my own time… or at least I have the opportunity to do so. But that freedom also means it’s awfully easy to push through day after day without realizing I need a break. Fortunately I’ve learned the symptoms. And you know what else? I’ve added things to my schedule without realizing I need to also schedule time for me to just be.
I love the word recreation because it’s really about re-creating – allowing space to just be.
Write well and often,

[...] Last Thursday I was muttering that I felt stale and promised to take most of Friday off. I did and took my grandkids (that’s Emily and Ben in this year’s Halloween costumes) to Balboa Park. We ate hot dogs, spent hours at the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center, first in what I call the gadget center, then in the virtual reality play area. Next we visited Comet Impact and got thoroughly shaken up… at least I did. We ended the trip with Deep Sea at the Imax Theater. [...]
