Writing From The Heart

by Anne Wayman on November 22nd, 2006

Writing Down the BonesI was talking with a friend in the construction business who is putting together his first website. That, of course, means he’s got to do some writing. It’s not his normal means of communication, although he is well spoken.

Someone he trusts suggested he write from the heart and he told me it had made it much easier for him to write. So what does write from the heart mean?

It probably means different things to different people, but I suspect is first it’s a willingness not to get stuck with the idea that writing has to be perfect. In fact, there isn’t a single piece of writing that couldn’t be improved, so reaching for some imagined perfection is an impossible standard – give it up!

The next step is to write what you really want to say, not what you think should be said or what you think is acceptable. If you’re angry, be angry in your writing. If you feel you’ve got a way to help people, pour out the words with no holds barred.

We’re talking about what Natalie Goldburg calls “writing down to the bones” and “wild mind.” It sometimes takes some digging, maybe through pacing or getting quiet to find out what’s really true for you about what you’re writing. Do what it takes, then spill it out on the paper – you’ll be getting to the heart of it.

Of course, the chances are you’ll need to do some serious editing. We rarely write clean copy when we’re writing from the heart, but at least when we come from there, we’re starting with honesty and truth.

Write well and often,

Anne Wayman
