The Golden Pencil: The Freelance Writer’s Resource

Picking Your Pay Fights

by Anne Wayman on November 24th, 2006

moneyGetting paid is always important to freelance writers. Here’s what happened to me recently.

A ghostwriting client and I set up monthly payments to me. I’d already gotten most of the first month’s payment as we got to know each other and I sent an invoice for the balance which was paid promptly. Then November rolled in, I invoiced, he went on vacation and a couple of days ago I called and asked him about the November payment.

He said he thought the balance of the first month’s payment covered November; in my mind it didn’t and I started to argue… he offered to send December’s payment early and I realized that we weren’t talking about the total amount, just November. And here it was with the end of November in sight.

I thanked him for being flexible, followed it up with an email where I apologized for the confusion. I did go back and read the contract and guess what, I was right, but so what? Remember, I was going to get the right amount for the total contract… it just meant it started in December rather than November, and he made the December payment early which helped me bridge my money.

He’s happy, I’m happy and that’s the way it should be – I’m glad I let go of my expectation in this case.

Write well and often,
