Juggling Writing Projects
Tammy Takahashi who blogs about education at Just Enough, and Nothing More asked me in a comment how many writing projects do you juggle at once? And what kind of system do you use to keep track of where you are in each assignment/project?
It’s a great question that is causing me to think about my writing process and writing business. I have two types of projects – writing I do for myself, like this blog, job postings, etc. and writing I do for clients.
Currently I have three clients:
- I blog twice a week at Senior Bank of Internet – this takes about 2 hours a week.
- Ghostwriting a business book – I spend between 1 and 15 hours a week on this depending on the client’s feedback and we’re getting toward the end.
- Ghostwriting a memoir – this is a longer term project – figure 1-15 hours a week, again, depending on client feedback
- And I just finished a copywriting job that will probably require editing
.
I actually track all these through GoalPro, a calendar/goal setting program. Well almost all of them, somehow I never did get the copywriting job in there, but it’s done.
Of course, I also track in my head. For example, I know that this week I’ve got to draft a chapter on the business book and get a good start on a chapter for the memoir. The copywriting job pushed both back, and I often get projects like that – limited in nature but paying well enough to make it more than worthwhile. I’ll be writing over the weekend this week, something I try not to do too often.
And the to do list can get pretty frightening at times. Right now I’m well aware I’m behind on the assignment for my copywriting class, but I also know myself well enough to know I’ll get it done.
Whew!
Write well and often,

Thank you Ann for writing this out.
Once your projects are done, what do you do? Does your goal-setting program have a backlist of finished goals?
Also, do you use this program to keep track of your queries and submissions?
Thanks.

Yes, goalpro tracks completed projects too… I don’t do many queries any more… but I could use it to track them if I did.
