Book Proposal - Final Rejections Are In

by Anne Wayman on December 8th, 2006

Sigh… I’ve finally gotten the last couple of rejections for Powerfully Recovered! And it keeps selling several copies a month all on its own.

I honestly don’t know what to do next. I’m proud of the book; I know it helps people because they email me and tell me so. I firmly believe it deserves a wider audience and I seem to be totally unwilling or unable to generate that wider market.

I’m also in the process of redefining my business… it’s grown helter skelter and over the next couple of months I intend to make some real decisions for the next couple of years. I don’t yet know how or even if Powerfully Recovered! fits into that scheme.

But I’ll keep you posted.

Write well and often,

Since your book is already written and is helping others, I hope you will find a way to keep it available to the public.

I was looking at the Web site that supports your book and I can see your passion to help on those pages. You should be recompensed for your writing. The bottleneck here seems to be marketing.

Do the publishers who are turning you down know something, or is there an untapped market out there? If the market is there, and with the rate of addicition and the number of 12 step participants, I can’t help but think there must be a market. The issue then becomes how to reach it and then how to present the book so it will sell.

If I get any flashes of insight, I’ll be sure to let you know.

Thanks for the update Anne. Sorry to hear about your proposal rejections.

However, I must say that you didn’t send it out to all that many places. This was only the first mailing.

So, although I understand there are lots of reasons why you might be letting go of the book, don’t let the rejections be one of those reasons! K?

Hi Anne, I can relate to what you wrote about unwilling/unable to find a market, and redefining the business. My own writing/business life is under review, and decisions about it feel so big, not sure what will happen. About your proposal rejections…hang in there till you find a fit. As you probably already know, persistence counts for a lot. Are there nontraditional markets that this might be right for?

Audrey, thanks for the encouragement… imo there’s an untapped market, but by it’s very definition it’s anonymous. Hazelden is the only big publisher that knows how to tap this one and they’ve turned me down 3 times I think over many years. I’ve done a fine job reaching the market and could reach more… I even know how… sigh… maybe I can hire an intern or something…

Just got email from Mylasia asking to reprint articles there… I’ll say yes for sure.

    Tammy, you’re right… only 9 this time… probaby 20 over time…

Joanne… do you have any ideas about non-traditional markets?

Keep your head up, Anne. You may not know “how” yet, but you should definitely make sure it’s in the scheme.

Actually, I did that once… maybe I should do it again. It was several years ago.
