Freelance Writing Jobs - 58 New Writing and Editing Jobs Today

by Anne Wayman on December 8th, 2006

jobpencilsI just posted 58 new freelance writing, editing and translating jobs.

I’m not sure why I include translation jobs… seems like at least some of the writers I know speak, read and write in more than one language, yet I know very little about translation. Somehow, at least in my mind, it falls roughly in the writing category.

I’m a little annoyed with one of the submission call outs. It was posted on craigslist for this website:

    http://www.diverseparent.com

This is one of those “perfect” jobs where I could easily fill their site with articles.

However, they are asking writers to just send in stuff, without any explanation on their website about payment or rights. There isn’t even information on how the articles will be used because the website isn’t functional yet.

So, I sent them a “what the hell is up?” query (of course, using polite wording) and if you’re interested, I’ll let you know what they say.

I’m never sure what to do with this type of post… the mental criteria I use runs something like… if it were a magazine, complete over the transom submissions would feel more acceptable… I think you’re right, either a query or even just a question re pay and rights is in order befor you put a word down.

I’ve thought a little bit about this, and it’s one of two things:

    1) They are just a VERY green online magazine. I remember when I started as the editor for HSC, I had no idea about rights or having submission guidelines, or anything.

    2) They are an article mill. Or SEO site. Since they say “anyone can submit stories”, implying that quality doesn’t matter, I wonder what it’s for.

I’m going to assume it’s option #1 until proven otherwise.

This was the response I received:

Thank you for your article submission.

We will eventually publish all the articles that we receive. Diverse Parent is a site dedicated to parents around the world thus we don’t require them to be perfect and nothing you submit will ever be rejected if what you write relates to parenting and children.

Please understand we have a lot of articles to read through, so even if you don’t see your article in the current issue, it will appear in future issues. We will notify you two weeks in advance of when your article will be published. For each article selected, you will receive $20/article and you own the rights to them as well.

Thank you again for your cooperation in making Diverse Parent a success.

    Best,

    Editor

so hard to tell isn’t it… sounds legit, may very well be… I guess if I had a parenting article I had tried everything for I might do this as a last gasp and not expect anything.

I was a little perturbed that they didn’t actually answer my question and by their letter they sent me, it didn’t seem like they had actually read anything.

But I decided to forget about it and move on. Well, I got this in the mail today:

    Hello,

Thank you for your interest in Diverse Parent. We have received your article, however, due to budget constraints; we cannot pay you for any submission. If you are still interested in having us publish your article as a contribution, then we would be happy to do so otherwise, we cannot use it for the time being.

In the near future, if our advertisement revenue starts to grow then we can offer you some compensation. Thank you again!

    Best,

    Sonia

So , at least now I have a name to work with (there were no names on the website, call out or the previous letter). But they still hadn’t read my letter. Which means, they probably haven’t read anyone’s submissions.

Which then brings me back to - why are they asking for submissions?

Putting the pieces together this is my guess - it’s a website purely to get clickthrus, probably by using SEO. They chose parenting because it’s a large topic and has a wide audience on the ‘net.

This may be a “legit” company, meaning they aren’t breaking any laws or lying. However, it’s not a place that a writer of any kind would gain from. If a writer really wants to get their stuff out there and nobody will take it, it would be better to have a blog, rather than send to places like this.

Final analysis - not worth it. Gonna let it go.

if they don’t pay it’s not worth it… I’ll try to remember not to include diverseparenting… thanks for the detective work.
