Chasing Pay Another Way
There’s this client… sort of a client. A couple of years ago he hired me to do regular blogging for a company which I did for about six months. Then suddenly I got an email from him saying somehow the contract had gotten screwed up, something he said he did, and my writing gig was cancelled. I didn’t think too much about it, knowing that stuff happens.
About six weeks ago he emailed me asking if I wanted to take on a copywriting job. We agreed on a price, he sent the materials and I made the deadline, pointing out where I had some confusion about some historical income information. I offered either to correct it if I could get clear on what was needed or, since he knew more about what was what, he could. I also said I was more than willing to edit whatever else needed to be edited.
The project dropped into a black hole until day before yesterday. I got an email from the client, cc’d to his client, apologizing for the delay and promising to have me his edits yesterday. Nothing came in yesterday and there’s been no response to my email today.
I know this guy well enough to know I’ll eventually get paid, but my next step is to send the invoice even though the project isn’t finished yet… sigh. I’m going to include a strong note saying I’ve done my job as best as I can.
Write well and often,

sorry to hear that. Sometimes people are just slack/hopeless and/or lazy about this kind of stuff :-(

Anne, do I ever feel for you! I just finished blogging about this very topic myself. We are twin daughters of different mothers - I’m convinced of it. :)
