GRRRR – Checkbook Reconciliation
A little over three years ago I took on the task of getting clear about my income and expenses. I’d actually lived my adult life in what might be described as total vagueness about my money.
The results of these efforts have paid off handsomely. I’ve been able to increase my freelance rates and am approaching creating a generous living for myself, including savings for myself, a home, taxes and the like.
A major piece for me has been tracking all my income and all my expenses, right down to the penny on a daily basis. Some might consider this a bit obsessive, but it’s working for me. I’m no longer vague about my money; I’m getting my credit well and truly cleaned up. I haven’t paid a late fee in ages. It’s great.
But I still have major problems reconciling my check books – yes, now I have two, one for personal stuff and one for the business. I don’t know what happens… I use Quicken because I know I can’t add and subtract reliably, but the whole business of downloading transactions and making it all match up remains a mystery. I don’t totally get it and I don’t know what information or concept I missing. I get close, but I’d like to be right on, at least most of the time.
As I struggled with this again early this morning, I realized I need to find someone to help me sort this out finally. It probably won’t be the bank, although they’ve been helpful. But bankers have a hard time understanding what my problem is… so do I!
Fortunately, I’ve got some friends I can ask, and if they can’t provide the answer, some of them will know someone who can.
Isn’t it great to realize we don’t have to try to figure out everything by ourselves?

Oh why oh why did you have to mention this? You see, I’ve put off the checkbook for WAY too long, and have already decided that after checking all my fun mail and websites, that I will tackle it. I think your post was a uncanny message to me to get BUSY!
