Free Speech? Protected Speech?
This is tricky… there’s a fairly well known blogger who has gotten death threats in her comments… very ugly. As I read through first her post about it and then some of her follow-up I gather that the more bloggers protest and point to her the more threats she’s getting… so I won’t.
But death threats are NOT protected speech – no way, no how and I truly hope she’s working with law enforcement to track this down.

There’s an essay on non-violence in the current issue of Ode magazine called Give Non-Violence A Chance. There are some interesting tidbits, including the fact that, as far as the author can tell, no language really has a word for it, “…except to describe it as something it isn’t: not violence.” Mark Kurlansky goes on to explain why non-violence isn’t exactly the same as pacifism.
He also makes some interesting points about the problems of winners writing history, with insights into American and other history I simply didn’t know.
Suffice it to say, The Golden Pencil is a place of non-violence, period. And if you’re not a subscriber to Ode you probably should be.
Write well and often,
