What Magazines Do You Read?

by Anne Wayman on May 27th, 2007

question_mark.jpgReading is such an important part of writing. I’m curious – what magazines do you read, and why? Here’s my list:

  • Atlantic Monthly – I like the writing and the liberal view, plus I pick up computer tips once and awhile.
  • Harpers – This one is tough going at the moment because they are so very good at pointing out what’s wrong.
  • Ode Magazine – I love this one for its solutions and optimism.
  • eWeek – although I certainly don’t read everything, it keeps me in touch with the computer industry.
  • PC Magazine – Again, it’s a way I keep in touch with what’s happening in computers… and again, I don’t read everything.
  • AARP – easy read, some great tip.

Now it’s your turn… what magazines do you read and why?

Write well and often,

I’ve recently taken up interest in WebMD’s print magazine, and even more so once I started with MentalHealthNotes.com.

The magazines I read change month to month, depending upon where I pitch.

Caledon Living, http://www.caledonliving.com, because it is art directed so beautifully. Oh, and also because I am the editor. OK, maybe that’s not entirely fair. I read every magazine I get my hands on, but for pure escapist pleasure, I like Oprah, Martha Stewart Living, Country Living, Style at Home and Canadian House & Home. I do not subscribe to any. I prefer to buy an issue that appeals to me from the newsstand. And I like to read what other people pass on to me.

I love Digital Photographer since I’m very keen on photography as well, National Geographic, and K-Zone, a children’s magazine, just because I write for it :D

I read “Money” and “The Deal” magazines, but I will pick up older copies of various other publications at the library from time to time. It all depends on what interests me at the moment — mostly personal interest, not business interest.

As a aspiring travel writer, I read any travel magazine I can get my hands on - especially in flight magazines. My two favorites at the moment are National Geographic Traveler and Budget Travel.
The library is a great resource for both older issues (great for finding out what they’ve published and how the articles are written) to the newest issues out. Cafes are also a great place to discover new magazines while enjoying a coffee.
