Lake Superior University, located in Michigan and the state’s smallest university, has again published its list of Banished Words. Of course the words aren’t banished, but they probably should be.
For example:
NOW PLAYING IN THEATERS — Heard in movie advertisements. Where can we see that, again?
“How often do movies premiere in laundromats or other places besides […]

The last couple of days I’ve felt, well sort of funky in the morning; not exactly in a bad mood, but unenthusiastic about my writing. Nothing in particular has been wrong… just a case of the blahs.
The solution has been pretty simple. I’ve started on whatever writing project was up even though I didn’t want […]

Only 28 new freelance writing jobs today - that’s the lowest number we’ve had in ages.
I suspect it’s because of the 4th of July… but that’s just a guess on my part… I truly haven’t a clue ;)

My dad used to rumble at me, the chains of habits are too small to be noticed until they’re too strong to be broken. I have no idea where he got this quote but I was reminded of it today when I read John Hewitt’s post at The Five Habits of Successful Freelancers.

It should be obvious, but I’m often surprised at how many writers fail to make it easy for people to contact them. As I experience it, my clients initially contacted me either by email or by phone.

Who do you believe? How can you tell? My bank insisted it was the client’s bank who refused payment. My client insists it was my bank. I certainly can’t tell looking at all the numbers and stamps that have appeared on a color copy of the check in question. My hunch is both banks are, […]

Just posted 48 New Writing, Editing and Translation Jobs.
Is it my imagination, or are there more “write for free” ads out there than usual? Maybe it’s summer dreams or something. Needless to say I don’t knowingly post those.

Ugh… I just got off a 40 minute phone call with a client. Because he called early, I hadn’t set up my headset and now I’ve got a stiff neck!
Of course, it wasn’t just a conversation; I was taking notes like mad with the phone tucked under my chin… I know better and it would […]

Get Paid to Write posted a list of articles they felt were worth reading… I agree. Of course, my own post is there, but the one I liked best is Can an E-mail Agreement be a Binding Contract? from AllBusiness.com.
The bottom line? With the exception of certain documents, like wills and other family matters, court […]
