When They (Finally) Put Me In Charge Of The World
When they (finally) put me in charge of the world, things are going to change!
Number one on my mind this morning is the people who design packaging will have to spend their lives opening them!
A new client resulted in me deciding I really must upgrade my Dragon Naturally Speaking. Reviews and a couple of writing friends assure me it will make transcription a snap. Being a bit webwise, I did a search and discovered Best Buy’s site claims they are having a sale on the Preferred edition, which is the one I want. The same site assured me my closest store had one copy… which brings me to another change.
Stores who claim they have the product in stock and don’t will be required to what… I’m not sure, but it will be severe. The lack of the promised software was made worse because it took forever to get someone to even check for me… then the explanation boiled down to “our database isn’t up to date and we don’t know how to fix it.” Not exactly reassuring from a company that’s trying to sell me tech stuff. But they did tell me the Santee store had five copies. Not happy with the vague directions the guy gave me, I took over their computer, got the address and off I took.
Little did I know Santee, a slightly sleepy city cheek to jowl with San Diego was having two festivals. I was reminded of how bad traffic can be, but finally found the Best Buy there.
Of course, the store’s database wasn’t showing the promised reduced site, but the wonderful clerk verified the sale and got her manager to okay the adjustment in my favor.
And now I’m having trouble opening the package! Actually, it turns out to be fairly simple, but anything but obvious.
Sigh – why do I suspect the manual will also drive me nuts?
